Once you have your engagement ring and Wedding Planning Mode turns on, you might find yourself not sure of where to start. It’s important to leverage the support around you and the tools at your fingertips to help simplify and organize your wedding planning process.
If you’re one of the 7 in 10 people in the United States with a social media account, it’s likely that websites like Facebook and Instagram are among your most frequently browsed websites and apps.
How to Use Social Media for Your Wedding
Here are the best ways to use social media to help with wedding planning.
1. Use a Custom Wedding Hashtag from the Beginning
Wedding hashtags are a great way to use social media to your advantage during the wedding planning process. Once you select a custom hashtag, use it anytime you post anything related to the big day. This will keep all of your wedding-related content organized in one place and begin to get your wedding guests familiar with it.
Get more tips on how to select and leverage your wedding hashtag in our article “Should we have a wedding hashtag?”
2. Follow Wedding-Related Accounts
You likely have a lot going on and it might not be top of mind to research wedding details. Instead of going out of your way, get relevant tips delivered directly to your feed! Follow top accounts like The Knot and WeddingWire on your platform of choice. This will provide you with a wide range of wedding planning content (without you having to hunt for it!) We also like more specific expertise areas of the industry, like wedding photographers (such as yours truly), or individuals who share financial tips like Budget Savvy Bride. On platforms like Instagram, you can also get exposed to different accounts by following specific hashtags like #weddingplanningtips #bridalstyle #weddingdetails or #ido. Once you start to engage with more wedding content, you’ll see more relevant posts targeting your feed.
3. Research Pinterest We couldn’t have a list with the top ways to use social media to help with wedding planning without including this one. Don’t underestimate the value of Pinterest! This is one of the best ways to use social media to help with wedding planning. According to this article from The Knot: “Whether you're looking for fresh color palette combos, trendy bridesmaid dresses, or hairstyles to match your venue, Pinterest is a gold mine of inspiration. And, as an added bonus, the site can also present you with wedding tips you didn't even realize you needed. Once you start adding various ideas to your wedding boards, the algorithm will get to know your tastes and curate your feed with personalized ideas, thus making the planning process insanely easier on you.”
Some of the best areas to use Pinterest for research include wedding colors, wedding themes, photography ideas, and wedding dresses.
Once you create your wedding board(s), follow Joy Photo and Video on Pinterest and start pinning away!
4. Get Inspired on Facebook Marketplace
Whether or not you frequent Facebook Marketplace for other areas in your life, it serves as a handy tool to get inspiration for the big day. Many newlywed couples use this platform to sell their gently used wedding items.
For example, flower vases or signage that were used once. (While we can’t vouch for the individual sellers, we suggest that you use it to browse. You’re likely to find products or styles of popular items that will give you some new ideas.)
5. Leverage Stories for reminders This is one of the best ways to use social media to help with wedding planning! If the due date for your wedding RSVPs is approaching and there are still a group of people who you haven’t heard from, leverage your Instagram and Facebook stories. To do this, create a ‘close friends’ category for people who you follow that are invited to the wedding. Then you can post a story and target just this group. Add a wedding countdown along with the direct link for people to RSVP. It will be a subtle, but meaningful, way to remind them. (And since they’re already online then a direct link to the RSVP page will make it easier for them!)
