Planning to get engaged and not sure how you want to create this special moment? We’ve compiled the best proposal places in Washington, DC for you to consider!
DC is one of the newest locations which Joy Photo and Video has expanded to and we have quickly fallen in love with the city and its surrounding areas. (We adore the local couples, too!)
Nestled against Virginia and Maryland, the capital of the United States has so much to offer. From historic sights to unique activities perfect for a variety of personalities, we think it’s a fantastic place to pop the question.
Get engaged at the Constitution Gardens. If you’d like to have a view of the Potomac River and the Washington Monument (but not get stuck in a sea of tourists), the Constitution Gardens is one of the best places to propose in Washington, DC. And if your significant other is a lover of history, this park is considered an American Revolution Bicentennial tribute— in addition to its natural beauty. Learn more.
Propose at the fountains at Meridian Hill Park. If a fountain engagement seems like a good idea, make sure to propose at the longest fountain in North America! The fountain is lined with beautiful steps and features 13 basins cascading into a large reflecting pool of water. Find a quiet spot and get down on one knee with the natural sound of water playing in the background. (Then celebrate somewhere neat in the future at a honeymoon spot with a special water feature, like Niagra Falls or Dunns River Falls in Jamaica!) Learn more.
Get the key to her heart at The Francis Scott Key Bridge. We’re big fans of bridge engagement moments when the sun is rising or setting—while in a safe, walkable spot, of course! Not only do bridges typically provide expansive views on the backdrop of your proposal, but you might also drive over the same bridge in the future. Every time you cross that bridge, you can both think back to this special moment. While there are dozens of bridges in the area, the Key Bridge at sunset is one of the best proposal places in Washington, DC. It is the oldest surviving bridge crossing the Potomac River (since 1923) and provides 360-degree views. Learn more.
Get artsy at the National Gallery of Art. DC has some of the best museums in the country so it was hard to narrow down the list for our favorite ‘creative’ engagement idea. (See what we did there? creative…art museum…) The National Gallery of Art is a well-known landmark in the area with world-renowned art exhibits and its prime location on the National Mall. After you’ve enjoyed the museum, visit the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and get down on one knee when it feels right. Free admission. Learn more.
Create a Cherry Blossom Proposal Moment at the Tidal Basin Loop Trail. If you’re looking for an engagement idea that can feature cherry blossoms in your photos, don’t look any further than the West Potomac Park. Visit the Tidal Basin Loop trail for access to the site where the very first cherry trees were planted. This is also where the Washington Cherry Blossom Festival takes place each spring. (It can be busy due to tourists so try to come early in the morning, between March and April, for the best views of cherry blossoms.) Learn more.
Propose in the Bishop’s Garden at the National Cathedral. If faith or historic landmarks is important to you or your significant other, the Washington National Cathedral is likely already on your list of places to visit. They have 59-acres of gardens and grounds and the Bishop’s Garden has a path that you can walk along to experience the terraced landscaping and gothic sculptures. This heavenly garden is inspired by the walled gardens in medieval times so you will feel transported back in time. Check their calendar in advance for visiting hours and potential admission fees, depending on which activities you plan to do. Learn more.
Set the romantic stage while on a Tricycle Tour. Whether you’re a tourist or native to the area, one of our favorite ways to see the city is on a Tricycle Tour. Since they only have room for a family, it will be more intimate than most touristy activities. And the best part about a proposal moment which involves travel is that you can pick a meaningful spot while on the tour that feels right. For another proposal with a similar vibe (but more adventurous), check out Segway or Cycling Tours. Do your research in advance to find a reputable company. Prices will vary depending on the tour and timeframe of activity. Learn more.
Create a memory on the water while on a Boat Tour. Another one of the best proposal places in Washington, DC isn’t really a place at all. Since DC is known for its waterfront views and iconic landmarks, combine these and create a memorable engagement moment on a boat! If you don’t happen to have your own boat, consider a small or private boat tour. Do your research in advance to find a boat company that you can trust, and let them know about your plans to get engaged. The cost of the tour will vary on type of boat, size of tour group, and length of time on the water. Learn more.
